Reel in an inside look at our epic fishing trip

This past week Traeger attended an EPIC fishing trip guided by Duane Diego and the Salty Crew team in San Diego, CA in search of fresh fish for an Ocean-to-Traeger feast. A handful of Traeger employees and Traeger Outdoors Pros, along with Field & Stream and Grind TV, came together to celebrate a fresh ocean harvest over a Traeger wood-fire.

Early morning wake-up calls were in order on day one where the crew would meet at Dana Landing Marina and cruise out to open waters. Pinnacle Sport Fishing, The Maven and The Impulse were the boats carrying the crew. All three boats struck gold right out of the gate, finding numerous schools of Dorado, Mahi and Yellowtail.

A long day on the water called for some serious wood-fired fuel. Traeger Chef Matthew Domingo had a smokin’ spread waiting that included cold smoked Yellowtail and Dorado Fillets served with cucumber, tomato and salsa verde, along with roasted pork belly, BBQ pork shoulder and ponzu and hoisin glazed fillets. To say the boys were happy about the kickass eats would be an understatement.

No rest for the weary was a constant theme for the hardworking crew as their next excursion would begin at 1:30 AM. The Impulse voyaged about 80 miles off shore to chase Bluefin Tuna, while the Maven held down the fort closer to shore. The second day was one for the books. The crew on the Impulse managed to land a 130 lb. fish while over on the Maven four guys hooked over 100 fish. The array of deep sea swimmers spanned from Mahi, Trigger fish, snapper and rock fish. The early morning hours and long day on the water was more than worth it for the team.

They returned to an all-star meal of fresh smoked Yellowtail and Dorado fish dip, homemade handrolls with smoked enoki mushrooms, grilled sweet onions, fresh wasabi root, grilled skirt steak and roasted pork belly all made by Chef Matthew. A trophy day called for a trophy meal.

Outdoorsmen and wood-fire enthusiasts have a lot in common, the main being their passion for bringing people together outdoors for adventures that don’t go without smokin’ food. It’s not hard to say that our fishing excursion with Duane, Salty Crew and our Traeger family was the catch of a lifetime.
