Mt. Baker Legendary Banked Slalom

by Traeger Grills on

Mt. Baker is home to the most prestigious and long-running snowboard competition in the world, and this year was the 30th anniversary of the Mt. Baker Legendary Banked Slalom contest. Located in the Snoqualmie National Forest in Washington state, the Mt. Baker peak stretches 10,781’ high and receives heaps and heaps of snow, which makes it prime real estate for winter sports. The LBS is steeped in tradition, friendship, and pure snowboard racing. The race is simple -- the fastest rider down the natural half pipe and through the banked turns is crowned winner.

We sent in the big guns—Cameron of Bam Bam’s BBQ and one of our pro members. Each evening Cam camped out and smoked his famous barbecue ribs, brisket, and pork on the new Pro 34 grill for the Traeger BBQ Après Ski events. We were honored to fuel the contestants and sponsors with warm, delicious meats and chilled brews courtesy of Snake River Farms and Good Life Brewery.

Friday night we had an awesome time serving epic BBQ to the C3 Capita Snowboard, Union Bindings, and Coal Headwear team. Cam smoked two Wagyu briskets from Snake River Farms for 16 hours --this delicious beef was perhaps the best brisket that we’ve ever tasted. With BBQ ribs and a keg of Sweet As Pacific Ale and Descender IPA from Good Life Brewing, it was a delicious and memorable night. As soon as the campers in the parking lot started to head to bed, Cam loaded up the grill with two more briskets for Saturday.

Saturday night we were excited to serve the K2 Snowboard Team, and we had the opportunity to meet and eat with the Howat family. The Howat’s own the ski resort, as well as organize and run the slalom event. They are amazing and kind people we won’t soon forget.

Saturday’s round of briskets were seasoned with salt, pepper, mustard, and seasonings. These babies had bark. Smoking them low and slow made the Snake River Farms beef tender and melt-in-your-mouth amazing. Cam also served up 3-2-1 style ribs that he Traeger-smoked for 3 hours, then slathered with butter and Traeger BBQ sauce.

The New Pro Series 22 and Pro Series 34 grills are available now at an authorized Traeger dealer.

The amazing custom mobile cabin had humble beginnings as a trailer, but Mike Basich, professional snowboarder, built it out to be functional lodgings to withstand an Alaskan winter. He hauls his tiny home around as he travels across the US snowboarding. Tiny houses are currently all-the-rage, Mike’s home is functional and helps him adventure 24/7. He picked up a Pro 22 at the event to keep the flavor flowing, wherever snowcapped mountains reign.

BBQ Cam doesn’t just barbecue legendary food--he’s also an athlete and likes to shred with his Lib Tech Skunk Ape snowboard. Though he wasn’t a competitor in this snowboard competition, The Legendary Banked Slalom receives more than 2000 applicants a year. This is eventually paired down to only 200 competitors that are proven to be the best of the best. There are many competition divisions ranging from Junior, Amateur, Masters, on up to a Pro level. Each level has a men and women’s division. We were lucky enough to rub shoulders over BBQ with some amazing snowboard talent like Scotty Lago, Shayne Pospisil, Laura Haidar, Scotty Whitlake, and Josh Derksen.
