The American Royal

Cooking over fire is our specialty, so we felt right at home sponsoring the World Series of BBQ American Royal competition in Kansas City, KS at the Kansas Speedway.


The American Royal World Series of BBQ competition is a two day event, the first day is by invitation only, and the second is an open competition. To be invited to compete, BBQ masters have won a state championship or contest consisting of at least 50 BBQ teams within the 12 months leading up to the Royal.

This year, the 37th American Royal BBQ Invitational contest had over 150 teams from across the U.S. and about 30 of the competitors cooked solely on Traegers. Based on the American Royal judges scores, competitors who cooked on a Traeger were able to win additional prize money in the Traeger Royal Battle.

On Friday we started smoking in the morning to get ready for our happy hour. BBQ champ Chad Ward, MLB MVP Bret Saberhagen, and our resident BBQ Pro Curtis were on deck smoking tri-tip and pork loin, then sliced the pork for all to sample.

We hosted a Traeger Dealer Event and over 80 dealers from around the region stopped in to check out our booth. For the Traeger Grill Owners hour, Traeger users could show a picture of their Traeger to get exclusive access and exclusive American Royal Traeger swag.

Doors opened to the public and our booth was packed. We had cornhole, samples, and a giant log to saw on. Throughout the evening the crowd sipped on Traeger-smoked Old Fashioneds.

As the night went on we kept on Traegering as Tim Montana & the Shreadnecks rocked the Traeger tent. Since our party was packed, we had chicken wings and burgers on the grill to keep the crew fed.

Saturday was the Invitational BBQ competition events. To get competitors ready, we served our delicious corned beef hash for breakfast to fuel their competitive fire.

As the gates opened to the public, thousands of spectators came to check out the BBQ and competitors. People handed out samples and we served Pulled Pork Sliders for lunch.

As part of the Invitational awards ceremony, Traeger Royal Battle awards were given in each category to the top scoring team cooking on Traeger.

The Traeger Royal Battle Invitational winners by category are:

Pork: Brewmasters Bar-B-Que won with their Pork Shoulder.

Brisket: Freeman Brothers BBQ

Chicken: Smoke N Babes BBQ

Ribs: Redneck Scientific took the prize with their Pork Ribs.


Sunday was the American Royal Open competition and 540 teams brought their rigs to try to earn their part of over $50,000 in prize money!

To compete for the Grand Champion, teams had to submit entries in each of the Big 4 competition types of meat; ribs, brisket, chicken, & pork.

We Traegered a Sausage Breakfast Bake for the competitors as they got ready to compete in the Big 4 categories and 5 ancillary categories. Our very own Chad Ward competed in the Open and placed 7th overall in potatoes. That evening we awarded the Traeger Royal Battle winners $500 for the top main meats and $250 per ancillary category, which included potatoes, beans, dessert, veggies, and sausage.

Ribs: Xtreme Texas Cookers from Houston took the prize for Pork Ribs.

Royal Winners

Everyone likes good BBQ and we had a great time spending the weekend with the best competitors at the American Royal BBQ competition in Kansas City.
