He’s co-founder of Whiskey Bent BBQ, a competitive BBQ team that is quickly running out of space in their trophy case. They’ve collected 7 state championship titles, 5 reserve state championship titles and over 200 top 10 overall and category finishes. Most recently, he took home 1st place, and received a perfect score, for chicken at the World Food Championships that he cooked on his trusty Pro 34. The Whiskey Bent team has two of them and takes them to every competition.

Tell us about your most memorable BBQ moment.
Winning the 2016 Old Florida Outdoor Festival Grand Championship is the most memorable to date. We beat 70 of the best teams in the Southeast US, it was our first five-figure payback for a contest and we set the record for highest overall score in the 15-year history of the Florida BBQ Association.
Who do you credit with helping you most in your career, any mentors or people you look up to?
Rob “Rub” Bagby from Swamp Boys BBQ has always been a great mentor and friend. He helped me early on in my BBQ career and even to this day. If I am struggling in a category, we will discuss it and he always has a tip or two to point me in the right direction!
For beginner pitmasters, what’s the one bit of advice you would give?
Don’t use time as your cooking guideline and let the internal temperature of the meat dictate the next step in your process or when it is done and ready to serve.
What’s your favorite thing to eat when no one’s watching?
Snicker’s….in a unique way. I like to nibble all the chocolate off the outside and then enjoy the nougat caramel center last.
