Meat Probe

One of the best tools to help you have successful cooks every time is your meat probe. But what happens when it's not working up to par or is throwing unfamiliar errors? Let's walk through some scenarios and make sure your meat is spot on, every time.

P01 and P02

If you have a non-WiFIRE (AC) grill with spots for two meat probes, you may see P01 and P02. These notifications simply show which probe is currently active. P01= Probe one P02= Probe two

Broken 3.5mm Jack

The 3.5 mm jack is the part of your meat probe that inserts into the controller. If the jack breaks off in the controller, the broken piece lodged into the controller will need to be removed. The best way to remove a jack is to purchase a jack removal tool. There are other DIY methods, but the tools designed for this purpose are what we recommend.

Once you get the jack out of the controller, you will need a new meat probe. Replacement meat probes can be purchased or replaced under warranty if your grill is still under warranty.

Grill Powers off when Plugging in Meat Probe

A grill powering off when you plug in your meat probe is due to electrical discharge. The controller shuts down as a safety precaution. To fix this, first try grounding yourself before plugging in the meat probe. Do this by touching the grill frame and then picking up the meat probe and plugging it in. If the grill still powers off, try power cycling the grill: turn off the grill, unplug, wait 10 seconds and plug it back in and turn it on again.

Inaccurate Temperature Reading

If you feel that your meat probe is reading incorrectly, first note that the acceptable tolerance of our meat probes is ±7.5°F. Additionally, WiFIRE-enabled controllers can be calibrated to accommodate a ±15°F variance by using the probe calibration option on the controller.

Probe Calibration

If you have a WiFIRE-enabled (D2) grill, one of the most common issues you may find with your meat probe is it not being calibrated. Calibration is easy; just follow these steps:

  1. First off, you will need to create an ice bath. We will use this ice bath to see what the probe reads when placed in a perfectly 32°F environment.
    1. Create an ice bath by completely filling a glass with ice.
    2. Fill the glass with just enough water that it reaches roughly 1/2 inch from the top. If you see that ice is floating off the bottom of the cup, gradually pour some water out until the ice rests at the bottom.
  2. Navigate to Menu > Settings> Probe Calibration.
  3. Select Calibrate Probe.
  4. Place the probe in the ice bath, gently stirring for 1 minute, to get an accurate reading as to what temperature the probe reads.
  5. The probe should read 32°F. If it does not, continue on to Probe Offset.

Probe Offset

Now that you have an accurate reading of how far off your meat probe may be reading, you can manually adjust the probe to give a more accurate temperature. For example, if your probe reads 41°F while sitting in an ice bath, you can offset the probe by 9°F so the probe more accurately reads the 32°F that it should.

  1. Navigate to Navigate to Menu > Settings> Probe Calibration.
  2. Select Probe Offset.
  3. Rotate the dial to adjust the probe temperature offset in 1° increments, from -15° to +15°F/-8° to +8°C. The default setting is 0, so if this is the first time you have adjusted the offset, you will be able to increase or decrease the offset by 15°F.
  4. Press the center of the dial to confirm and return to the settings menu.
