Recently, Apple has announced and released their newest updates to product and software. For the most part, the new update and its compatibility with our app has worked properly. The only issue is for an iOS user that has not yet paired their grill but has updated their device to iOS 14.
If you have not yet paired your grill, you may experience an error during the first attempt at pairing. If this happens:
- Restart the pairing process.
- Once you have begun the pairing process the second time, you should receive a notification asking you to give your Iphone permission to pair with the app.
- Once permissions are granted, the pairing process should be successful.

If you're having trouble pairing your phone to your grill, start here. We've found that many WiFire connectivity and pairing issues result from some easy-to-resolve home network settings.
Remember, like most smart home connected devices Traeger WiFire grills can only use 2.4GHz networks since these have better range and ability to go through walls and obstacles than 5GHz networks.
***Note: After every connection attempt, always power cycle the grill (Turn it off and on again)***
Grill and Network Setup Checks
Are you attempting to connect to the grill via Bluetooth?
Are you attempting to connect directly to the grill via your phone's WiFi setup network? (looks like "TRAEGER-XXXX" in your phone’s WiFi network menu).
- We've all been there. You've got that great new grill and you just want to get going with it. Traeger WiFire grills connect to the internet through your home WiFi network, and the entire process is done through the app. There's no need to connect to it the way you're used to through multiple phone setting menus.

Have you created an account and have the correct login credentials?
- Network login info is easy to mis-type on a phone. Make sure you have your network name and password entered exactly.
- If you still can't get it, use the "Forgot Password" function on the app or at traegergrills.com
Home grill setup and location in yard
Is the grill's pairing setup network name visible on the phone's WiFi network menu?
- Verify that the grill is not already connected to a WiFi network (MENU > WIFI INFORMATION)
- In your phone's WiFi Network menu (usually in SETTINGS) see if "TRAEGER-XXXX" is present (XXXX can be any combination of numbers and letters. If present in the Network menu, the grill's WiFI module is functioning and the issue is more likely to be with the home network.
What is the distance between grill and router?
- The grill should be as close as possible, but within 30ft/10m is considered acceptable.
Is the grill facing the WiFi network router?
- The controller should face the router for best signal reception. If you have a Timberline make sure that the antenna is installed under the hopper.
How many walls or other obstacles could be interfering with the WiFi signal?
- Masonry and steel building materials will reduce signal strength considerably, as will a router located in a basement or behind pipes/wires.
- If there is no way to move the router closer to the grill, consider investing in a network booster or extender.
Are you using the QR code under the hopper lid? Has the controller been changed at any time?
- If the controller has been changed and the customer is trying to use the QR code sticker originally installed on the hopper, the app will look for the wrong UUID/controller info
Home WiFi network setup and configuration details
Do you have both 5GHz and 2.4GHz network bands set up?
Are there 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks with the same name?
- Like most smart home devices Traeger WiFire grills will only connect to 2.4GHz networks as that provides a stronger connection over greater distances than the faster 5GHz band. The WiFi module on the grill will not be able to even "see" 5GHz networks. To ensure a smooth initial pairing with your grill make sure that:
- Your phone is connected to a 2.4GHz network. For the initial pairing process your phone must be on the same network you intend your grill to be on, and 5GHz networks will not be noticed.
- If you have both 2.4GHz and 5GHz network options ensure that they do not have the same name. This can lead to frustrating and inconsistent pairing issues.
- If you are unable to separate the 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks a better solution may be to purchase an inexpensive dedicated 2.4GHz router for your grill (and other smart home devices).
- If you're not sure what bands your network uses or you're not sure how to set it up contact your internet service provider.
Is your phone switching what network it is connected to before the pairing process is complete?
Is your phone consistently trying to connect to the grill's setup WiFi Network (TRAEGER-XXXX)?
- The "TRAEGER-XXXX" network is the name that the grill broadcasts when it's not connected and is ready to pair. By default modern smartphones will automatically connect to the network with the strongest signal.
- If your phone thinks that your grill is providing the strongest signal it may keep switching to that network before you finish the pairing process.
- To prevent your phone from automatically switching networks go into its WiFi network menu and either turn off auto-join networks or turn off Auto-Join for the network it keeps trying to connect to.
- If turning of Auto-Join does not fix the issue. Go into your phone settings and have your phone forget the "Traeger-XXXX" Network.
Have you set up any enhanced or additional security measures on your home network?
-VPN being used on the device?
-No DHCP server used on network?
-802.1X authentication enabled on network?
- Any additional network security measures will prevent the grill-to-phone pairing process from completing.
- Make sure the grill is whitelisted or consider investing in a dedicated inexpensive router for the grill.
Is the WiFi Network name very long, include spaces and/or have special characters?
- Controllers can only recognize network names with 32 or fewer characters, and spaces take up 3 characters.
- If you have special characters in your network name, try removing them.
- For example, if you named your WiFi network "This is my long network name" it would be 38 characters long and will not connect.
Try these before calling a Traeger Tech
Is the grill's setup WiFi network/SSID visible in the device's WiFi network menu?
- On the controller navigate to MENU > WIFI INFORMATION. If the grill is NOT currently connected to a network the setup SSID will be visible, looking like "TRAEGER - XXXX" with XXXX being any letters or numbers.
- Look on your phone's WiFi Network menu. If "TRAEGER-XXXX" is visible in the list of local WiFi networks the issue is most likely with network setup details and not with the controller.
Have you tried clearing the app memory cache on your phone?
- Android: Varies with device brand, but typically found in the Device Settings or App Settings menu.
- iOS: Delete and Re-install app (this clears the app cache in iOS)
Have you power cycled your network router?
- Unplug Router and wait at least 10 seconds; Plug router back in and let it fully come back online.
Have you reset the WiFi network settings on the grill controller?
- On controller: Go to MENU > WIFI INFORMATION; Hold IGNITE for 10-15s. This resets the WiFi settings and allows you to start over with a fresh initial pairing process on most grills.
- NOTE: this will only work on D2 grills that already have V2.00.01 firmware or later. This "Network Reset" function is NOT available on AC Timberline grills (1st gen Timberline) or D2 grills with V2.00.00 or V1.XX.XX firmware.
Verify that the grill is receiving a strong enough signal
- Install a WiFi signal strength app (there are many highly-rated free apps on the Apple App Store and Google Play). Check the signal strength of the 2.4GHz network that you want to use the grill on where you have your grill.
- Traeger WiFire-enabled grills require a signal strength of between -30dbm and -70dbm to connect, operate, and download updates. Going past -70dbm towards -80 or -90dbm will result in pairing, re-connecting, and firmware updating difficulties.
